Estetika

sebenarnya tahukah anda apa itu estetika >....<
apa yaaaa ???

Konsep the beauty and the ugly

Contoh : Lukisan, Patung, Puisi, Novel, Cerpen, Arsitektur.

Contoh :
Melukis memakai jari, melukis memakai badan, memakai rambut. Lukisan dari daun-daun. Membaca puisi sambil berdiri diatas satu kaki, Berpidato, berorasi dst.

Seni amat luas, sebagai sesuatu karya maupun sebagai suatu cara!

Estetika, mengacu pada keindahan dari sebuah karya!
Seperti, keindahan sebuah bangunan, sebuah jembatan! Keindahan sebuah lukisan!

kopi

Percaya gak percaya, kudu percaya.

Bukan asal njeplak aja ni gw ngomongnya, tapi ada suatu riset Journal of the American Heart Association, membuktikan :

* Dapat mengangkat sel kulit mati dan memperbaiki kulit yang rusak.
* Mampu menetralkan kulit yang teriritasi sekaligus memberi nutrisi pada kulit.
* Bisa menghilangkan bau badan.
* Berkhasiat merevitalisasi sel kulit baru dan menjaga kelembapan kulit.
* Bermanfaat menghilangkan bekas jerawat, flek dan noda hitam.
* Dapat menghilangkan selulit jika dilakukan secara teratur.
* Mampu memperbaiki sirkulasi darah dan memecah lemak di tubuh yang dapat menimbulkan selulit.
* Berfungsi sebagai astrigent/penyegar karena kandungan pH – nya sama dengan kulit (4,5), sehingga mampu mengurangi dan menghilangkan jerawat atau noda pada kulit.
* Memberi proteksi ringan terhadap sinar UVA atau UVB.

ide Daripada ampas kopi bubuk yg abiz lo minum kebuang sia2, mending mampir dlu deh ke kulit kita buad luluran,. hehhe

Ohhh Iyaa...

praktikum masa SMA -____-

SISTEM PERNAPASAN PADA MANUSIA
2 Februari 2009

I. TUJUAN PRAKTIKUM

( D. A. Pratiwi, dkk, 2007 : 121 ).
(Saktiyono 1999 : 98).
Alat pernapasan manusia :
1. Hidung
2. Tekak
3. Laring
4. Trakea
5. Bronkus
6. Bronkiolus
7. Alveolus
8. Paru-paru
( Dedi. M. Rochman dan Saptijh Nurwiati, 2005 : 220 ).

III. ALAT DAN BAHAN
Adapun alat dan bahan yang digunakan adalah :
No Nama Alat Jumlah Keterangan
1 Balon kecil 2 buah Tidak berbahaya
2 Balon Besar 1 buah Tidak berbahaya
3 Pipa Y seperlunya Tidak berbahaya
4 Sumbat karet Seperlunya Tidak berbahaya
5 Karet gelang Seperlunya Tidak berbahaya
6 Plastisin Seperlunya Tidak berbahaya
7 Lem perekat seperlunya Tidak berbahaya
8 Botol aqua besar 1 buah Tidak berbahaya

IV. PROSEDUR KERJA

Gambar 1 : Model Paru-paru
Keterangan gambar :
1 = ujung pipa Y
2 = balon
3 = karet
4 = botol aqua besar
X = karet ditarik
Y = Karet didorong

V. PENGAMATAN

Data Pengamatan :
Perlakuan karet Keadaan balo Udara ( masuk/keluar )
Ditarik Mengembang Udara masuk
Di Didorong Mengempis Udara keluar

Hasil Diskusi :
Nama organ Ciri Struktur Fungsi
Faring Berongga Sebagai saluran pernapasan
Laring Berongga,
terdapat serabut-serabut otot Jalur masuknya udara

Jelaskan mengapa?
4. Jelaskan tentang mekanisme pernapasan dada dan perut, meliputi hal-hal berikut :
a. Otot-otot yang berperan membantu pernapasan
b. Mekanisme inspirasi dan ekspirasi
Jawab
1. Bronkus sebelah kanan bercabang tiga, sedangkan bronkus sebelah kiri bercabang dua. Kemungkinan akibatnya adalah
4. a. Otot polos, otot diafragma, dan otot antar tulang rusuk (interkostal).
b. Inspirasi terjadi jika otot-otot antar tulang rusuk berkontraksi sehingga dada terangkat dan udara luar masuk.
Ekspirasi terjadi antar tulang rusuk relaksasi, yaitu dada turun kembali pada keadaan semula sehingga rongga dada mengecil akibatnya udara keluar

VII.

The legend of Timun Mas
Long time ago, there was a farmer couple. Unfortenately, they hadn’t had any children yet.
They prayed to God for a child One day a giant passed their home. He heard what they were praying. Then giant gave them a cucumber seed.
Then the couple planted teh cucumber sees. Each day the took care of teh growing plant so carefully. Month later, a golden cucumber grew from the plant. Teh cucumber was getting heavier and bigger each day. When it was ripe, they picked it. Carefully they cut of the cucumber and how surprised were they when found a beuatiful bay inside. They were so happy. They named the baby Timun Mas.
Many years after, Timun Mas had grown into a beautiful girl. Her parents were very happy. But thier happiness turned to fear when her 17th birthday came. The giant was going to take Timun Mas away.
The father was giving a small bag to Timun Mas, equipped with magic stuff, salt, chilty, cucumber seed, shrimp paste as weapon. Her father told her that it could help her from the giant. He ordered Timun Mas to run away.
The giant was chasing Timun Mas and he was getting closer and closer. Timun Mas then took a hardful of salt from her small bag. She spread out the salt behind her. Suddenly a wide sea appeared between them.
Timun Mas was still running, the giant almost caught her. Then she took some chilly and threw them to the giant. The chilly suddenly grew into some trees and trapped the giant. Timun Mas could escape again.
Unfotunately the giant almost caught Timun Mas. So she took me the third magic stuff, the cucumber seeds. She trow the seeds and suddenly they became a wide cucumber field. The giant ate those fresh cucumber. He ate so much that he felt sleepy and fell asleep soon.
Timun Mas kept on running as fast as she could. But the giant had woken up Timun Mas so scared. Then she threw her last weapon, shrimp paste. It became a big swamp. The giant fell into it but his hands almost reached Timun Mas. But at last he was drowned.
Timun Mas was safe now. Then she returned to her parents house her parents were very happy.

TIMUN EMAS (THE GOLDEN CUCUMBER)
A long time ago, a farmer and his wife lived in a jungle. Everyday they went to the sacred tree where they prayed begging for a child. When they were praying, a giant passed and heard their prayed. The giant gave them a cucumber seed. He said to the farmer, “You will have a baby girl, but you have to promise me to give the child to me when she is seventeen years old. They agreed, because they wanted a baby very much. The giant gave them the seed, then they went home.
Next day, they planted the seed in the yard. They watered it everyday. They made fences around it to keep it from animal’s disturbances. Day by day the vine got bigger and bigger. A flower bloomed and finally it became a small gold cucumber. The cucumber grew rapidly, then became a big cucumber. The farmer picked it when it was ripe and brought it home. When they arrived, they laid it on the floor. Slowly the farmer cut it. Wow! They were surprised. The farmer said to his wife, “Look! My wife, there is a baby in it. His wife replied, “Yeah! How cute the baby is” They were very happy and they named her Timun Emas, means the golden cucumber.
Timun Emas blossomed into a real beauty with black hair, slim body and bright eyes. When she was seventeen years old, the giant came and said to the farmer, “I am coming to take your daughter”. The farmer tried to calm the giant by saying, “Ooo … do not worry. She is playing in the garden now. Let my wife get her”
Meanwhile his wife found Timun Emas and gave her four things in a cloth bag and said to her, “My daughter, the giant has come to take you. Bring this bag with you for fighting him”
“What can I do, mother?” asked Timun Emas
“Run as fast as you can, “ said the farmer’s wife. “Throw one of three things whenever the giant comes close”
Then Timun Emas ran as fast as she could.
Meanwhile the giant was impatient. He broke the hut and looked for Timun Emas. From the garden he saw Timun Emas running towards the jungle. Then he ran after her. When he almost caught her, she took out the first thing from the bag, a handle of salt, and threw it towards the giant. Suddenly the ground between Timun Emas and the giant turned into a wide sea. The giant tried to catch Timun Emas by swimming. It was very hard of course. It was a good chance for Timun Emas to run further. But in a short time the giant almost caught Timun Emas again. Timun Emas threw a handful of chilies. In a flash, there grew a thorny dense bush around the giant. The giant screamed with a pain, but again, the giant got free and was almost able to catch Timun Emas. She took out the third thing from the bag, a handful of cucumber seeds. Suddenly, the ground turned into very wide field of cucumber vines. The giant felt thirsty and hungry, and then he ate lots of fresh cucumbers. The giant ate, ate and ate again and finally he feel asleep. When she saw this, Tminu Emas ran as far as she could but the giant woke up and ran after her quickly. Knowing the giant was coming closer and closer, Timun Emas threw out the last thing, a handful of shrimp paste. The ground where the giant running suddenly turned into a sea of mud. He was trapped there. He screamed and sank into the sea of mud. Timun Emas quickly went home. The farmer and his wife were very happy.
“Mother, Father, I am still life” shouted Timun Emas.
“Oh, my dear” said the farmer and his wife while embracing her.
“Thank God, our daughter is safe”, said the farmer and his wife again. They were very happy. No more fear. They did not want to lose their daughter anymore. The giant was died.

Lah rak yo aneh ta .. wong janda kok pingin punya anak …. Nah ini dia ! Suatu hari mBok Siring eh mBok Sirni didatangi oleh raksasa yang ingin memberi seorang anak. Lah gimana caranya, mbok Sirni kan manusia biasa bukan species raksasa, jadi ndak mungkin lah. Tapi namanya Buto Ijo kan juga sakti wong dia punya bioteknologi yg huebatt, bukan sekedar bolo kurowo atau gedibal saja.
Namun Pak Buto Ijo memberi syarat apabila anak itu berusia empat tahun harus diserahkan ke Buto itu untuk disantap dijadiin istri. wedian kiyi …. mosok anak kecil mau disantap dijadiin istri, Lah wong Buto Ijo ini kan Seorang Raksasa (eh raksasa apa orang nih), kan bebas ta, Buto itu ga tau aturan apalagi etika, blaik tenan. Setelah dipikar-pikir akhirnya Mbok Sirni-pun setuju.
Semakin hari Timun Emas tumbuh menjadi gadis kecil cantik jelita.
Suatu hari datanglah raksasa untuk menagih janji Mbok sirni amat takut kehilangan timun emas, dia mengulur -ulur janji agar raksasa datang 2 tahun lagi. Tapi gimana cara ngomongnya ya.
“To to … Buto Ijo …
Blaik ! mBok Sirni kaget bukan kepalang. Raksasa Ijo jelek lagi … tiba-tiba muncul. Masak kayak begini jadi istri si Timun Emas, batinnya. “Mestinya burung pipit ya dapet burung pipit, burung merpati jodonya burung merpati … lah ini kakak tua ikut-ikutan mengejar burung parkit !” (ini Buto Ijo emang mau ngikuti jejak Dato K menyunting Siti Nurhaliza, … upst!)
Si Timun emaspun disuruh lari lewat pintu belakang. Raksasapun mengejarnya, wueladalah … huayu tenan jebule. Dikejarlah si Timun Emas.
Setelah berlari jauh Timun Emas kecapaian. Si Timun Emaspun teringat akan bungkusannya, maka ditebarnya biji mentimun. sungguh ajaib, hutan menjadi ladang mentimun yang lebat buahnya. Si Buto Ijo kesenengan memakannya tapi buah timun itu malah menambah tenaga Buto Ijo. …
Seketika hutanpun menjadi lautan luas. Dengan kesakitan dan kesaktiannya raksasa dapat melewati. Batin si Buto Ijo, ” whalah wong cuman gas kick dan over pressure gini mah keciil ..”
“Hua hahahah ha ha, Mosok lawan Buto kok pakai terasi …!” Terus kakinya gedrug-gedrug sambil meloncat-loncat …. timbullah gempa!

THE GOLDEN SNAIL
Keong Mas or the Golden Snail was a transformation of
a princess who had been cursed by a witch.
.
Adjacent to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) Jakarta, you'll find a huge theatre resembling a snail in golden hues, a cinerama theatre boasting a circular three dimensional screen, called Keong Mas ( The Golden Snail). It is reported to be the largest of its kind in the world.
According to it, here is a legend of the Keong Mas.
Prince Raden Putra was married to a princess named Dewi Limaran. One day when Dewi Limaran was walking in the palace garden, she saw a snail among her lovely flowers and she had one of her servants pick it up and throw it away. The Snail was actually an old witch who had disguised herself as a snail. The witch was very angry, so she cursed Dewi Limaran and changed her into a golden snail and threw it into the river. The stream carried it far away from the palace.
On the side of a big forest, there lived a poor widow. Her living was only fishing. One day it was a particularly bad day as she didn't catch any fish. Again and again she spread her net, but nothing got caught into it. At last she pulled up the net to go home. Suddenly she saw something shining at the bottom of it. It was only a snail. Nevertheless she picked it up and took it home. Its shell shone like gold the old woman had never seen such a snail before.
At home she put it in an earthen pot. She then went to bed and soon was fast asleep as she was very tired. The next morning when she woke up, she found to her amazement that the floor had been swept clean and there was some food on the table. She wondered who had done all this. She thought she was dreaming, but she was not. She thought and thought but could not think of anybody who could have been so generous to her.
Some days passed….…..she then got an idea. The next morning she took her basket and went out as usual, but shortly she returned to her hut and hid herself. Suddenly she heard a soft movement inside the earthen pot and saw the snail creeping out of it. It grew bigger and bigger and in a moment a lovely young girl stood where the snail had been. The empty shell fell to the ground behind her. Quickly the young girl swept the floor. Then she took rice, vegetables, meat, eggs etc. out of the pot and began cooking.
When the old woman saw all this, she noticed that it was not an ordinary snail she had caught, but a person who lived under a spell, and she knew what she had to do to break it.
She crept stealthily to the empty shell, took it, and then rushed out of the hut to throw it into the river. Now she had broken only a part of the spell, and the rest of it must still be broken before she could return to her husband.
The young girl then made herself known to the old woman.
"I shall pray to the gods that the prince might be led to his place," said the old woman.
Many years passed by…….
The king persuaded his son to look for another bride, but at first Prince Raden Putra refused as he could not forsake his wife. In the end, however, the prince asked his father if he could go out to find a bride, but one who was a look-alike of his former wife. An old faithful servant accompanied him on his trip.
They went from town to town and from village to village until one day were travelling through a big forest and they lost their way. Finally the men came to a big river and not far from it they saw a hut. They went to it to ask for some food and drink as they were hungry, thirsty and dead tired. The old woman welcomed them warmly. Raden Putra found the meal served by the old woman excellent. She told him that her daughter had prepared it. Raden Putra then asked whether he might meet and thank her daughter. The old woman had no objections and called her daughter to come out. The young girl appeared and knelt down in front of Raden Putra with her head bent.
When Raden Putra saw her, he caught his breath in great surprise as the young girl looked exactly like his former wife princess Dewi Limaran. "You are the bride I'm looking for!" he cried out. But the girl shook her head and said that she had made a promise : when a man wanted to marry her, he had to obtain the holy gamelan ( Javanese orchestra) from heaven which could make music without being touched.
Raden Putra was willing to try and went out into the forest. He then fasted and meditated. After a hundred days the gods heard and granted his wish.
On their wedding day the holy gamelan played its heavenly music. It was so beautiful that every person who heard it felt happier than ever.
The young girl than revealed her secret, that she was Dewi Limaran herself. The music of the gamelan had broken the evil witch's spell.
The old woman had been invited to remain in the place. Now she had everything she wanted and sorrow had left her forever.

THE LEGEND OF SITU BAGENDIT

Far away in an isolated village there was a young rich woman. The house that she had living in was very big. Her wealth was plentiful. The young woman lived by herself. She didn’t have any friend at all.
“Wouw, I am very rich! Ha…ha…ha, I am the richest woman in this village!” said the young woman while she was looking at her gold and jewelries. It was so pity, that the young woman was very miserly. Her plentiful wealth never been used to help others.
“All of the wealth is mine, isn’t it? So what am I give it all to other for?” The young woman thought. However, many of villagers were poor. They lived in less condition. Sometimes some villagers were hunger, and didn’t get any food for days.
Because of the young woman miserly, the villagers called her Bagenda Endit. Bagenda Endit meant the miserly rich person. “Bagenda Endit, have mercy on me! My child has not eaten for few days”, said an old woman sadly.
“Hi, you crazy old woman! Get away from me!” yelled Bagenda Endit threw the old woman away. Because the old woman didn’t want to go, Bagenda Endit splashed her with water. Splash!, and all over the old woman body and her baby became wet.
Bagenda Endit was a feeling less woman. She didn’t even have a little bit mercy to the old woman and her baby. She even got more angry. After that, she asked the old woman to get out of her house yard. And then, she was dragging her out of the yard.
Although Bagenda Endit was very miserly, the village people kept coming in. The came for the water wheel. “No, I won’t let you to take away the water from my wheel! The water in the wheel is mine!” Bagenda Endit yelled angrily.
“Ha…ha…ha…you’re all stupid! You think you just can take the water from my wheel!” Bagenda Endit said while she was watching the thirst villagers outside the fence. Suddenly, a decrepit man was standing in Bagenda Endit house yard. He was walking tottery to the wheel while holding his stick.
When the old man was trying to take the water, Bagenda Endit saw it. Then, she hit the old man with a founder. “Have mercy on me Bagenda Endit! I want to take the water just for a drink”, said the old man when he was trying to get up.
Bagenda Endit kept beating the old man. And then, an astonishing thing happened. Suddenly the old man got up with a healthy body. He walked closer to Bagenda Endit. He pointed his stick at the cruel rich woman’s nose.
“Hi, Bagenda Endit, take the punishment from me!” said the old man loudly. Then he pointed at the wheel with his stick. Wus…byuur, the wheel was sprinkling the water swiftly. Not long enough, the water was flooding up. Bagenda Endit couldn’t save herself. She drawn with all of her wealth.
The village was disappeared. The thing that left was a wide and deep lake. The lake was named Situ Bagendit. Situ means a wide lake. It was named Situ Bagendit, because the wide lake came from a wheel that belongs to Bagenda Endit.

STONE FLOWER
People in the Kingdom of Wanakerta have been worried. The Queen Dewi Kalasekti has been ill for a long time. Traditional healers and shamans have been ordered to come, but no one could cure the queen. When the priest of the kingdom was meditating, devoutly he hard a voice echoed. “The only medicine for the Queen in ‘the stone flower’. It has no leaf, no stem. Its color is white. It grows on the stone hill in the same direction of the sunset.”

The meeting was soon been held. Tumenggung Arungbinang was chosen to search for the flower. “I am willing to sacrifice anything to get the medicine for Queen Dewi Kalasekti”, he promised. Tumenggung Arungbinang was brave, honest and loyal. He left the castle carrying a heavy task. He had very determined will. The medicine for the queen must be found.

Arungbinang arrived at one village on a downhill. He asked the village girls he met, “Are there any of you who know where the stone flower grows?” “We’re sorry. We’ve never heard of it before”, they answered. Arungbinang asked the village elder has never heard of it either, moreover has seen it before.
In front of him was the steep slope. Without any doubt, Arungbinang climbed it up. Very slowly he climbed up higher and hunger. Because of his determined will and strong courage, finally he reached the hilltop. He searched the stone flower with thoroughly and carefully. But, it was a pity that he could not find it there. The hilltop was soon left.

Arungbinang kept walking to the west side. Tens of villages and forests were passed by, teens of hills were climbed, but the stone flower was still not found. The Legend of Toba Lake
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman lived in a North Sumatra. Don’t ask me the year, all I know it was a very long time before you were born. When he was fishing in a river, a big fish was nailed. This fish had gold color all over its body. It was beautiful. The fisherman was very excited. He imagined a delicious dinner in his head. He put the fish in his basket and went home happily.
When he got home, he put the fish in a sink. He grabbed a knife to kill the fish. But when he almost killed it, he saw the fish eyes and felt pity. He took the knife away and put the fish in washbasin and added water in it. “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t kill you” the fisherman said.
The fisherman went fishing again. But this time he couldn’t get any fish. He went home with nothing in his hand. His stomach started to sing. He walked home slouching. He was surprised when he saw smoke came out from his kitchen.
“Who cooked in my kitchen?” he confused.
He took a peep and surprised when he saw a beautiful girl cooked in his house. “Why there’s a girl in my kitchen?” he confused.
The fisherman entered the room. “Who are you?” he asked the girl.
“I’m the fish.” The girl said.
The fisherman looked the washbasin and saw nothing in it. “The fish?” he asked incredulous.
“Yes. You didn’t kill me and I’m very thankful. I will return your kindness.” The girl said.
“That’s ok. I didn’t ask any return” the fisherman said.
“But I have to.”The girl insisted.
“Well, I lived alone. I don’t have family. If you want to be my wife, I will be very happy.” The fisherman asked the girl.
The girl smiled and said “I’d love to but you have to promise me that if we have kid you can’t tell him about me.”
And so, the fisherman and the fish girl were married. And then they had a child called Samo. Samo was very naughty. He couldn’t be advisable. He always played and never helped his parents.
One day Samo was asked to deliver lunch to his father. On his way, he met his friends and forgot to deliver his father’s lunch. Samo played with his friends. When he was tired and hungry, he was resting under a tree and ate his father lunch. Meanwhile his father waited him in starve and tired. His father went home and saw Samo played. “Where is my lunch?” he asked.

“You were told to deliver my lunch but you didn’t listen.” his father was very furious. “I can’t handle you anymore. You are very naughty. Go away from me. Don’t come home anymore.” His father yelled and evicted Samo from his house.
And this what happened if you can’t control your mouth when you angry. His father said the words that he wouldn’t suppose to say. “You… fish’s son.”
Suddenly, the sky was getting dark. The storm was breaking the ears. The rain felt from the sky like giant hose sprayed water all over the place. And then the water came out from the land and getting harder.
Sumo’s mother was very sad. “I told you don’t tell him about me” she said to her husband. “Now I’m going back to be fish again. Good by” the mother was transformed magically to be gold fish again and disappear through the water. The water was getting higher and drown the village and formed a lake.
Meanwhile, sumo run to the hill and stayed there. The hill then was surrounded by the lake.
Now the lake was known as Toba Lake. Toba came from Tuba word means no mercy. And the hill in the middle called Samosir Island. Samosir means ‘Samo di usir’ or in English : Samo have been evicted.
This is just a legend, there were so many versions of the name’s story. You can’t tell which one is really true. But I heard this version since I was a little girl.

The Legend of ‘Lamafa’: East Nusa Tenggara

Lamafa, a local term for a whaler in Lamalera village, along with its whaling tradition, was already around hundreds of years ago, before Catholic missionaries entered East Nusa Tenggara in 1500s. To reach the village, visitors fly 30 minutes from Kupang, the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara, to Lewaleba regency on Lembata Island, and continue the trip by ship or car for another four hours.
The village is believed to be the only place in the country which has traditional whalers.
Carolus Keraf, one of the whalers, said he learned the skill and how to take down a whale with a bamboo spear, from his father, who was also a whaler.
“My father also got the skill from my grandfather,” the 35-year-old Carolus said. Carolus, who has two daughters, still hopes to have a son to inherit his whaling skills.
Lamalera whalers use a bamboo spear, which has a sharp steel tip, to kill the marine mammals. The whaler jumps from his wooden boat and pierces the weak areas of the whale, which are its genitals and fins.
After the first stab, the whaler leaves the spear in the body of the whale and swims back to his boat while his assistants hold a rope tied to the spear.
The whaler then spears the mammal several more times, while his assistants hold the rope until the whale dies. Once the whale is dead, they then pulled it to the shore.
“The last time I got a whale, it took me only half a day to kill the whale. Sometimes we spend two to three days killing a while if the whale drags our boat far into the sea,” Carolus said.
There is always one whaler in a boat with five to nine assistants. During the whaling season which usually runs from May to August every year, three to five boats sail together to hunt whales and dolphins.
The whaler who spots a whale first claims “ownership” over the mammal and thus has the right to hunt the whale. Other whalers then stay away from the whale and only come closer to help if the boat is capsized.
The dead whale is divided into three — the head is for the landlords of the village, who are considered as the “owners” of the sea, the fin is for the whaler, while the body is for the boat owner.
A boat is usually owned together by a small tribe in the village which has a population of about 2,000 people or 800 families in 14 small tribes.
Besides consuming the meat, the villagers also barter the meat for corn, vegetables and cigarettes brought by other villagers living in the island’s mountain region.
There is also a rule in the village that says that a whaler is banned from killing a blue whale since that kind of whale once helped villagers.
“There was a legend that the blue whale once saved our ancestors from drowning in the sea,” said Abel Beding, a village tribal leader.
The 61-year-old man said people did not want to eat or trade in the meat when the whaler got a blue whale.
“So we don’t kill blue whales. However, once we got a blue whale, we then mixed the meat with the meat of other whales. So, they did not know they ate blue whale meat,” he said.
Before kicking off the annual whaling season, the villagers usually conduct a special ritual to bless their whalers on Lamalera beach.
Since Catholicism has the main religion in the area, the traditional ritual is now mixed with the religious messages.
To mark the beginning of the season, villagers conduct two mass ceremonies led by a priest from a local church.
Hundreds of residents join the masses conducted in front of the small St Peter Chapel built on the beach. St Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, is their preferred saint because he was a fisherman himself.
The first ritual is a requiem, which is held in the evening, to remember and invite the souls of fellow whalers who died while hunting. The second mass is conducted in the morning with a sermon, gospel reading, host and donation to the church. At the end of the ceremony, the priest sprinkles water to bless the spears, boats and the sea.

::..HISTORY & LEGEND
The Madurese people preserve a number of myths explaining their origins, among them the story of Raden (Prince) Segoro. It is told that in times long past the Javanese kingdom of Medang Kamulan was ruled by one Prabu Gilingwesi, whose daughter, Dewi Bendoro Gung, became pregnant as the gods had willed. The king, however, became angered and ordered one of his ministers, Patih Pragulang, to kill her.
Obeying the command, Patih Pragulang sailed the princess out to sea on a raft, but at the last moment was unable to carry out the deed. Eventually the raft came to rest on the land which was to be called Madura, which is said to stem from the words 'Madu', meaning honey, and 'oro', open Country. Dewi Bendoro Gung later gave birth to a handsome boy who was to be called Raden Segoro.

At the age of three the child encountered two sea-serpents which, through the intervention of Empu Polleng ( Patih Pragulang disguised) changed their forms and became the pusaka (heirlooms) named Alugoro and Nenggolo.

On becoming an adult, Raden Segoro served the king of Medang Kamolan and on one occasion successfully repelled a Chinese invasion. Returning to Madura he asked his mother about the identity of his father.

Enraged by her son's question, Dewi Bendoro Gung turned his dwelling place into what is now the forest of Nepa and a haven for monkeys which according to local belief are descended from the soldiers of Raden Segoro. Nepa can be found in the district of Banyuates, 42 km north of Sampang.

Another legend recounts the story of Jokotole, son of the Putri (princess) Kuning, who was a grandchild of Pangeran Bukabu of Sumenep. Jokotole and his brother Jokowedi had been conceived by way of a dream encounter between Putri Kuning and their father Adipoday. While journeying to Majapahit to assist his stepfather named Empu Kelleng, Jokotole met with his uncle, Adirasa, who gave him the flying horse Si Mega and a whip, troth of which had been entrusted to him by Adipoday.

To this day the horse Si Mega continues to live as the Regional Emblem of Sumenep. The whip, too, is one of Madura's well known souvenirs, and the names Jokotole and Putri Kuning (Madurese "Pottre Koneng') can be found on the ferry boats which run between Surabaya and the Madurese port of Kamal.

Epigraphical evidence helps to reveal the role played by Madura in the general history of Indonesia, as well as the island's relationship with the ancient rulers of Java. For instance, it is known that during the period of Singosari (1222 - 1292 A.D.), the Regent of Sumenep, one Aria Wiraraja, ruled over the whole of Madura and, together with Raden Wijaya, helped to establish the Javanese kingdom of Majapahit after successfully repelling the punitive force sent to Java by the Chinese Emperor Kublai Khan in 1292 - 1293 A.D.

At the beginning of the Islamic period, the new religion was introduced into the Madurese court circle by a crown prince of the kingdom of Palakaran (Arosbaya, Bangkalan) named Pratanu, son of Prince Pragalbo.

A century later, during the golden period of Mataram under the leadership of Sultan Agung, a grandson of Pratanu named Raden Praseno was given authority over the whole of Madura, with the title Pangeran Cakraningrat I. His seat of power was at Sampang. He in turn was succeeded by his son Raden Undakan, who became Pangeran Cakraningrat II.

During this period the recently established Dutch East India Company (VOC) began to exploit Mataram's internal political strife, which resulted in the rebellion of Trunojoyo and the forced exile of Cakraningrat II to Lodaya. When the rebellion was finally put down, Cakraningrat II returned to rule over western Madura, with a new seat of power at Tonjung (Bangkalan).

Cakraningrat II was succeeded by his son Cakraningrat III, whose rule was ended abruptly by a rebellion incited by his younger brother R.T. Suroadiningrat, who became Cakraningrat IV.
However, because he opposed the Dutch East India Company he was forced into exile in Tanjung Harapan and his son, R.A. Secoadiningrat (Cakraningrat V) took power. The seat of government was moved again at this time to Sembilangan. Cakraningrat V was succeeded by his grandson, Panembahan Adipati Cakraningrat VI, who in turn was succeeded by his uncle, Adipati Cakraningrat VII. Since the time of the setting up of a capital at Arosbaya in 1528, the religion of Islam spread eastward across the island and had a profound effect upon Madurese social and political life.
From that time until today the main historical events can be noted down as follows:
- 1624 The forces of Mataram under Sultan Agung occupied Madura.
- 1672 Trunojoyo rebelled and succeeded in ousting Sultan Agung's forces
- 1680 With the help of the Dutch East India Company, Mataram succeed re-occupying the eastern part of Madura, with seats of Government at Sumenep and Pamekasan. This part of the island, however, was eventually ceded to Dutch (VOC). Western Madura (Bangkalan, Sampang) was restored to the descendants of Prince Cakraningrat.
- For a further two and a half centuries the Dutch colonial administration i creased its hold on Madura This bitter situation turned even worse under forced labour introduced by the Japanese, who occupied Indonesia in 19 until the declaration of Independence in 1945.
